It&#8217;s so good, I wish <I>I&#8217;d<\/I> written it, not least of all so I could have seen all those amazing films for research.<\/p>\n<p><LI><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"howfar.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beatrice.com\/howfar.jpg\" width=\"207\" height=\"250\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" \/>I love Nicholson Baker&#8217;s <A href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0821261932\"><I>The World on Sunday<\/I><\/A> (which, I should disclose, is published by the same folks who do <I>Stewardess!<\/I>) because I&#8217;m a sucker for old newspapers, and these giant-sized illustrations, mostly from the <I>New York World<\/I>, are absolutely gorgeous, like this magazine section cover from 1907 (left).<\/p>\n<p><LI>By now, with <I>The Complete Peanuts<\/I> four volumes in, you don&#8217;t need me to tell you to go out and get <A href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/1560976705\">the 1957 and 1958 strips<\/A>, but did you know that Fantagraphics is also republishing the collected <I>Dennis the Menace<\/I> strips of Hank Ketcham? <A href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/1560976802\">1951 and 1952<\/A> are available now, and if you&#8217;ve been bored by the daily strip for years, let me tell you: In the &#8217;50s, this kid really was a menace. Ketcham&#8217;s sense of humor&#8212;and the stunts Dennis pulls&#8212;are a lot more wicked, the parents actually have flashes of personality, including dark sides, and when he was at his peak, Ketcham was a master draughtsman.<\/p>\n<p><LI>Before <I>The Time Traveler&#8217;s Wife<\/I> made her a famous novelist, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.audreyniffenegger.com\/\">Audrey Niffenegger<\/A> was primarily a visual artist&#8212;and the &#8220;illustrated novel&#8221;  <A href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0810959275\"><I>The Three Incestuous Sisters<\/I><\/A> shows off both sides of her talent to awesome effect.
