{"id":921,"date":"2006-03-23T17:42:31","date_gmt":"2006-03-23T21:42:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2006\/03\/23\/interview-roundup-2\/"},"modified":"2010-11-26T17:45:38","modified_gmt":"2010-11-26T21:45:38","slug":"interview-roundup-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2006\/03\/23\/interview-roundup-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Interview Roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"jessicaabel.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beatrice.com\/jessicaabel.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"120\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" \/>The <i>Village Voice<\/i> chats with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/books\/0612,press,72600,10.html\">graphic novelist Jessica Abel<\/a> about, among other things, how her comics have often been miscontrued as thinly veiled memoir: &#8220;When <i>La Perdida<\/i> was first serialized [in 2001], everyone assumed it was autobiographical, but as it went along people figured out Carla wasn&#8217;t me&#8212;or hoped it wasn&#8217;t me, given what happens in the book.&#8221;<\/p>\n<li>As long as we&#8217;re talking about comics, here&#8217;s an interview with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darkhorse.com\/news\/interviews.php?id=1261\"><i>manga<\/i> legend Kazuo Koike<\/a>, perhaps best known for <i>Lone Wolf and Cub<\/i>&#8230;but whose <i>Lady Snowblood<\/i> was a key influence on Quentin Tarantino for <i>Kill Bill<\/i>. And lest we still have any doubts about the signficance of <i>manga<\/i>, Koike describes it as &#8220;the only new&#8212;and perhaps, the last new&#8212;commodity that Japan can proudly present to the world.&#8221; As he points out, &#8220;gross yearly sales in the Japanese automobile industry are 20 trillion yen ($170 billion). Gross sales related to intellectual property, of which manga is a major subset, are 14.7 trillion yen ($125 billion).&#8221;<\/p>\n<li>I was hoping that I&#8217;d get to meet Elizabeth Kolbert this weekend at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vabook.org\">Virginia Festival of the Book<\/a>, but our panels are scheduled directly opposite one another. So for now I&#8217;ll have to settle for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/content\/?050425on_onlineonly01\">this <i>New Yorker<\/i> promotional interview<\/a> for her series of articles on climate control&#8230;<\/p>\n<li>One of the best books I&#8217;ve read in the last month is Naomi Novik&#8217;s <i>His Majesty&#8217;s Dragon<\/i>, which is basically like Patrick O&#8217;Brian, but with dragon riders. Seriously amazing book; it&#8217;s a mass-market original coming out any day now from Del Rey, and you&#8217;ll want to pick it up.
