{"id":838,"date":"2010-10-07T00:01:43","date_gmt":"2010-10-07T04:01:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2010\/10\/07\/inject-some-horror-into-a-harlequin-romance\/"},"modified":"2016-05-27T11:09:39","modified_gmt":"2016-05-27T15:09:39","slug":"inject-some-horror-into-a-harlequin-romance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2010\/10\/07\/inject-some-horror-into-a-harlequin-romance\/","title":{"rendered":"Inject Some Horror into a Harlequin Romance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week, romance novelist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janetmullany.com\/\">Janet Mullany<\/a> came to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ladyjanesalon.com\">Lady Jane&#8217;s Salon<\/a> and read an excerpt from her new novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0061958301\"><i>Jane and the Damned<\/i><\/a>, which is sort of like <i>Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter<\/i> except that Jane Austen isn&#8217;t hunting the Damned, she&#8217;s joined their ranks, and together they&#8217;re fighting off French invaders.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image837\" src=\"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/bespelling-jane-austen.jpg\" alt=\"bespelling-jane-austen.jpg\" align=\"right\" \/>The scene she read was entertaining, so I&#8217;ll be interested to see how Mullany fares adding a paranormal twist to a modern retelling of <i>Emma<\/i>, which is the theme of a novella called &#8220;Little to Hex Her&#8221; that she&#8217;s contributed to a new anthology of supernatural-tinged, Austen-inspired stories called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0373775016\"><i>Bespelling Jane Austen<\/i><\/a>. To celebrate its publication, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eharlequin.com\/store.html?cid=189\">Harlequin<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diesel-ebooks.com\/\">Diesel eBook Store<\/a> have launched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diesel-ebooks.com\/cgi-bin\/category\/mash\">a genre mash-up contest<\/a> (watch out for the automatic audio file) where contestants take the plot summaries for novels like <i>Whisper of Scandal<\/i> and <i>The Bride&#8217;s Bodyguard<\/i> and load them up with monsters.<\/p>\n<p>Each day the contest runs, Harlequin and Diesel will pick one semi-finalist to be featured on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Diesel-eBooks\/65993378480\">Diesel&#8217;s Facebook page<\/a>; those fifteen entries will then be narrowed down to six by a jury that includes yours truly and Sarah Wendell of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com\"><i>Smart Bitches, Trashy Books<\/i><\/a>&#8212;and those six entries will be read in front of a live audience at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/A-Harlequin-Halloween-Genre-Mash\/calendar\/14963682\/\">a &#8220;mash-up meet-up&#8221; at The Brickyard<\/a> (785 9th Avenue) on Thursday, October 28, which I&#8217;ll be emceeing.
