Friday nights,<br \/>\nRamirez and I downed two extra-largers per, hardly pausing<br \/>\nTo pull on longnecks so cold chunks of ice<\/p>\n<p>Still knocked around inside the bottles. Today<br \/>\nYou can only get pizza at the franchise parlors in town<br \/>\nWhere the freshest thing going is the waiters.<br \/>\nAnd nobody tosses anymore. Instead, they pancake<br \/>\nTheir wheat-germy dough through rubber wringers<br \/>\nLifted from old washing machines in the junkyard.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0804011281\"><i>The Room Within<\/i><\/a> is the second collection of poems by Moore Moran, which also includes &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/theformalist.org\/ebooks\/moran.html#VII\">On Wyeth&#8217;s <i>Below Dover<\/i><\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/theformalist.org\/ebooks\/moran.html#XIV\">Ordinary Time in the Pews<\/a>&#8221; (which has also been published as &#8220;Ordinary Days&#8221;), and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/theformalist.org\/ebooks\/moran.html#XI\">That Breakfast<\/a>,&#8221; all of which were published in a chapbook by the New Formalist Press. It also contains &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcriterion.com\/articles.cfm\/Late-in-the-night-1992\">Late in the Night<\/a>,&#8221; published in <i>The New Criterion<\/i>, and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poemtree.com\/poems\/ParisAfter.htm\">Paris, After<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poemtree.com\/poems\/TodayInTime.htm\">Today in Time<\/a>,&#8221; both of which were also included in Moran&#8217;s award-winning 1999 collection, <i>Firebreaks<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The poems in this collection were written over the course of more than five decades, along with other poems such as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poemtree.com\/poems\/SleepingBeauty.htm\">Sleeping Beauty<\/a>&#8221; (first published in 1956) and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poemtree.com\/poems\/MountainDesert.htm\">The Mountain Desert<\/a>&#8221; (1986).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Custom House Cafe stood on this spot, straddling Pier and seawall like a fisherman gaffing catch.
