Scarcely do we see him
\nlost in all his wandering,
\ndollop of cold rice in a dirty palm,
\nwhatever slumber he can muster
\nhard won from snakes and rocks and seething rain,
\nthe febrile congress of frogs, the unseen
\nunrest of insect worlds, the wind-
\nbegotten complaints of the hunted, the haunted
\ncreatures perishing in the dark.<\/p>\n

Like Christ in Grünewald’s triptych,
\nhe looks like a man who’s truly spent
\na lifetime nailed to a shadeless tree:
\nskinny arms like tired entreaties,
\nface like a cave, each protruded rib
\na distinct refusal, once and future
\nbeauty of the body discarded
\nlike a murky early draft.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
