Repeat. Crease those legs.<br \/>\nReverse the fold. Define her neck,<br \/>\ndefine her tail, run the bone knife flat.<br \/>\nDip each wing down and pull them<br \/>\napart, flattening her back. If she means<br \/>\nto stay by your dinner plate, press your<br \/>\nmouth to that belly and push the air in.<br \/>\nIf she means to fly, grip her head and tail,<br \/>\npull so she flaps in the sky of your palm.<br \/>\nIf she&#8217;s good luck, thread a sharp needle<br \/>\nand hang her with her thousand sisters.<br \/>\nWhen she laughs it is only a crab scuttling<br \/>\nthe length of that gullet. When she cries<br \/>\nit is only the weeping of rice against stone.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0393076512\"><i>I Was the Jukebox<\/i><\/a> is the second collection from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandrabeasley.com\/\">Sandra Beasley<\/a>, who also runs the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/sbeasley.blogspot.com\/\"><i>Chicks Dig Poetry<\/i><\/a>. Washington, D.C., residents can meet her this Saturday at &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/thewriterscenter.blogspot.com\/2010\/03\/writing-future-one-day-conference-at.html\">Writing the Future<\/a>,&#8221; a one-day conference at Bethesda&#8217;s Writers Center on &#8220;the transitions and innovations taking place in the literary and publishing worlds.&#8221; (I sort of wish I was in on that action, but I guess I can&#8217;t go to <i>every<\/i> future of publishing conference in America!)<\/p>\n<p>Three more poems from this collection appeared in <i>Agni<\/i>: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/agni\/poetry\/online\/2008\/beasley3.html\">I Don&#8217;t Fear Death<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/agni\/poetry\/online\/2008\/beasley1.html\">Love Poem for Wednesday<\/a>,&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/agni\/poetry\/online\/2008\/beasley2.html\">My God<\/a>.&#8221; <i>Poetry<\/i> published &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/poems.com\/poem.php?date=14432\">Unit of Measure<\/a>&#8221; last summer.
