Last month, <i>The Nation<\/i> published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/doc\/20090302\/henri_cole\">three more recent poems<\/a> that originally appeared in <i>Blackbird and Wolf<\/i>; the Academy of American Poets has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poets.org\/poet.php\/prmPID\/1083\">several more<\/a> (with some overlap). You can also <a href=\"http:\/\/henricole.com\/id10.html\">hear Cole read from his work<\/a> on his own website. Other Cole not in this selection include &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2136856\/\">Eating the Peach<\/a>&#8221; (<i>Slate<\/i>) and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cstone.net\/~poems\/hairccol.htm\">Haircut<\/a>&#8221; (<i>The Paris Review<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I favor a poetry where the soul (both the poet&#8217;s spirit and representation of personality) is not occluded by language, not perishable, and not anesthetized by ambition,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetrysociety.org\/psa\/poetry\/crossroads\/on_poetry\/poets_on_complexity_henri_col\/\">Cole wrote in 2000<\/a>; more recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/whatarewritersreading.blogspot.com\/2009\/12\/henri-cole.html\">he shared a reading list<\/a> that included works by John Koethe, Marilyn Chin, and Louise Gl&#252;ck (as well as short stories by Joyce Carol Oates).<\/p>\n<p>Cole will be reading this Sunday (March 14) at the Pierre Menard Gallery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I remember the shade where I found her spent and bruised like the fallen apples.
