{"id":464,"date":"2010-01-27T23:51:06","date_gmt":"2010-01-28T03:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2010\/01\/27\/howard-zinn-1922-2010\/"},"modified":"2010-02-27T20:32:44","modified_gmt":"2010-02-28T00:32:44","slug":"howard-zinn-1922-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2010\/01\/27\/howard-zinn-1922-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"Howard Zinn, 1922-2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image463\" src=\"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/howard-zinn.jpg\" alt=\"howard-zinn.jpg\" align=\"right\" \/>It was just a little over a month ago that I encouraged you to <a href=\"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2009\/12\/14\/the-people-speak\/\">watch <i>The People Speak<\/i><\/a>, a series of performances based on historical documents that had been collected by Howard Zinn in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/1583226281\"><i>Voices of a People\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s History of the United States<\/i><\/a>. As I was finishing up work today, I was saddened to hear that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/01\/28\/us\/28zinn.html\">Zinn died of a heart attack<\/a> earlier; I had been inspired by many of his books, but most especially his memoir <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0807070599\"><i>You Can&#8217;t Be Neutral on a Moving Train<\/i><\/a> because, when I read it in my late 20s, it was a testament of living true to one&#8217;s values that told me exactly what I needed to hear at the time I read it.<\/p>\n<p>Zinn&#8217;s version of American history is not the polite version most of us were taught growing up; on the other hand, because he was relentless in championing alternative perspectives, that version has become more commonly known. If you haven&#8217;t read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0060838655\"><i>A People&#8217;s History of the United States<\/i><\/a> yet, I highly recommend it&#8212;if you don&#8217;t wind up agreeing with Zinn, he should at the very least drive you to question your assumptions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was just a little over a month ago that I encouraged you to watch The People Speak, a series of performances based on historical documents that had been collected by Howard Zinn in Voices of a People\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s History of the United States.
