{"id":301,"date":"2009-08-13T15:27:13","date_gmt":"2009-08-13T19:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2009\/08\/13\/fred-pohl-national-book-award\/"},"modified":"2014-10-03T19:50:04","modified_gmt":"2014-10-03T23:50:04","slug":"fred-pohl-national-book-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2009\/08\/13\/fred-pohl-national-book-award\/","title":{"rendered":"<i>Jem<\/i>: The Science Fiction Novel the Literary Establishment Embraced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image300\" src=\"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/fred-pohl-natlbook.jpg\" alt=\"fred-pohl-natlbook.jpg\" align=\"left\" \/>The National Book Foundation is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the National Book Awards by looking back at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/nba77fictionwinners.html\">every one of its fiction winners<\/a>, and the first contribution I&#8217;m making to the series is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbafictionblog.org\/nba-winning-books-blog\/1980-4.html\">an appreciation of Frederick Pohl&#8217;s <i>Jem<\/i><\/a>, the first and only winner of an American Book Award (1980 was a strange year for the Foundation) for hardcover science fiction.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s only a few paragraphs, but I explain why the American Book Award for science fiction didn&#8217;t go along with the Hugo and Nebula commendations, and how certain aspects of Pohl&#8217;s novel find resonance with other authors from Charles McCarry and Ted Mooney to Jonathan Lethem and Junot Diaz.
