In such air<br \/>\nIs no room for mercy. Days when we go up<br \/>\nThe mountain, then down, only to head up<\/p>\n<p>Again. Up to the edge, hurrying<br \/>\nTo get however much done before weather.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sophie Cabot Black&#8217;s new collection, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/9781555976415\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The Exchange<\/i><\/a>, also includes &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bostonreview.net\/poetry\/eat-what-you-kill\" target=\"_blank\">Eat What You Kill<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bostonreview.net\/sophie-cabot-black-love-poem\" target=\"_blank\">Love Poem<\/a>,&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bostonreview.net\/sophie-cabot-black-it-never-goes-away\" target=\"_blank\">It Never Goes Away<\/a>,&#8221; all of which were first published in <i>Boston Review<\/i>. Then there&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/poetry\/2010\/05\/17\/100517po_poem_black\" target=\"_blank\">Private Equity<\/a>&#8221; (<i>The New Yorker<\/i>), plus two poems from <i>Slate<\/i>: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/poem\/2011\/07\/sheetrock.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sheetrock<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/poem\/2009\/07\/biopsy.html\" target=\"_blank\">Biopsy<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I met up with Sophie at Book Court, an independent bookstore in Brooklyn, earlier this summer, to record an episode of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehandsell.com\"><i>The Handsell<\/i><\/a>, where we talked about the metaphorical framework that runs through these poems, and then she came up with some other poets for me to read when I told her I was a fan of Matthea Harvey, Paul Muldoon, and Kevin Young.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you rise you must remove any sign Of rising: footprint, a branch displaced, The shifted rock.
