Perhaps in heroin<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s a calm in which you can fit<br \/>\na thousand notes into one beat.<\/p>\n<p>Drums, bass, Hammond organ&#8212;<br \/>\nthese are unnamed men, faces<br \/>\nyou&#8217;ve met all your life<br \/>\nand bargained with, nodded to,<br \/>\nyet they have no difficulty<br \/>\nwith the subtlest modulation.<\/p>\n<p>The audience is three drunks,<br \/>\none cursing an imaginary waitress,<br \/>\none mumbling apologies, one sleeping.<\/p>\n<p>Now try to eat your extremely salted cashews<br \/>\nso slowly there will always be one left.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0307959325\" target=\"_blank\"><i>A Night In Brooklyn<\/i><\/a> is the tenth collection of poems by D. Nurkse, the borough&#8217;s former poet laureate. It includes &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2008\/08\/summertime\/6894\/\" target=\"_blank\">Summertime<\/a>&#8221; (originally published in <I>The Atlantic<\/i>), &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.threepennyreview.com\/samples\/nurkse_w08.html\" target=\"_blank\">The North Side<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.threepennyreview.com\/samples\/nurkse_w12.html\" target=\"_blank'>The PowerPoint<\/a>&#8221; (<i>The Threepenny Review<\/i>), and three poems from <i>The New Yorker<\/i>: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/poetry\/2007\/08\/06\/070806po_poem_nurkse\" target=\"_blank\">There Is No Time, <i>She Writes<\/i><\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/poetry\/2011\/10\/31\/111031po_poem_nurkse\" target=\"_blank\">The Bars<\/a>,&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/poetry\/2009\/04\/20\/090420po_poem_nurkse\" target=\"_blank\">Damariscotta<\/a>&#8221; (which was originally published under the title &#8220;Newfane&#8221;).
