Mitchell<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I thought I couldn&#8217;t be surprised:<br \/>\n&#8220;Do you write on a computer?&#8221; someone<br \/>\nasks, and &#8220;Who are your favorite poets?&#8221;<br \/>\nand &#8220;How much do you revise?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But when the very young woman<br \/>\nin the fourth row lifted her head<br \/>\nand without irony inquired:<br \/>\n&#8220;Did you write<\/p>\n<p>your Emily Dickinson poem<br \/>\nbecause you like her work,<br \/>\nor did you know her personally?&#8221;<br \/>\nI entered another territory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do I really look that old?&#8221;<br \/>\nI wanted to reply, or &#8220;Don&#8217;t<br \/>\nthey teach you anything?&#8221;<br \/>\nor &#8220;What did you just say?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The laughter that engulfed<br \/>\nthe room was partly nervous,<br \/>\npartly simple hilarity.<br \/>\nI won&#8217;t forget<\/p>\n<p>that little school, tucked<br \/>\nin a lovely pocket of the South,<br \/>\nor that girl whose face<br \/>\nwas slowly reddening.<\/p>\n<p>Surprise, like love, can catch<br \/>\nour better selves unawares.<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ve visited her house,&#8221; I said.<br \/>\n&#8220;I may have met her in my dreams.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0393342689\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Traveling Light<\/i><\/a> is the thirteenth collection of Linda Pastan&#8217;s poems. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2007\/08\/ash\/6045\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ash<\/a>&#8221; appeared in <i>The Atlantic<\/i>, while &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/poetry\/2009\/11\/16\/091116po_poem_pastan\" target=\"_blank\">The Burglary<\/a>&#8221; was published in <i>The New Yorker<\/i>. <i>The New Republic<\/i> published &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/article\/books-and-arts\/years-after-the-garden\" target=\"_blank\">Years After the Garden<\/a>,&#8221; and <i>The Paris Review<\/i> published &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6007\/eve-on-her-deathbed-linda-pastan\" target=\"_blank\">Eve on Her Deathbed<\/a>.&#8221; <i>Nimrod<\/i> published &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poem\/242404\" target=\"_blank\">Counting Backwards<\/a>,&#8221; but it&#8217;s available online through the Poetry Foundation&#8217;s website, which also hosts &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poem\/237556\" target=\"_blank\">On the Steps of the Jefferson Memorial<\/a>&#8221; (first published in <i>Prairie Schooner<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Plus, you can hear Pastan read &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/poem\/2008\/03\/acorns.html\" target=\"_blank\">Acorns<\/a>&#8221; at <i>Slate<\/i>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>photo: Margaretta K.
