When I interviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alicealbinia.co.uk\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Alice Albinia<\/a> earlier in 2012, and we got to talking about what she&#8217;d been reading lately, she mentioned that she&#8217;d been giving that question a lot of thought&#8212;and solicited a lot of input, too.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the books that came up: W.G. Sebald&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0811214133\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The Rings of Saturn<\/i><\/a>, Jonathan Coe&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0679754059\" target=\"_blank\"><i>What a Carve Up!<\/i><\/a> (also known as <i>The Winshaw Legacy<\/i> in America), David Kynaston&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0747585407\" target=\"_blank\">Austerity Britain<\/i><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0802717977\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Family Britain<\/i>, and Norman Davies&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/067002273x\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Vanished Kingdoms<\/i><\/a>&#8212;that last book isn&#8217;t coming out in the U.S. until later this year, and its subtitle has been changed from &#8220;The History of Half-Forgotten Europe,&#8221; which is how she knew it, to &#8220;The Rise and Fall of States and Nations,&#8221; which is certainly more concrete but honestly doesn&#8217;t sound anywhere <i>near<\/i> as exciting.<\/p>\n<p>For a change of pace, Albinia also mentioned that she&#8217;d liked Nicole Krauss&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0393340643\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Great House<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You could consider this short video clip another <a href=\"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2012\/07\/04\/a-sneak-preview-of-beatrice-2\/\">sneak preview of <i>Beatrice<\/i> #2<\/a>.
