My tracks were oval holes<br \/>\nlike whole notes or snowshoes or Dover soles.<\/p>\n<p>Roaring waves of fighters headed back to Bentwaters.<br \/>\nThe tide advanced in blunt cod&#8217;s-head curves,<br \/>\nebbed through the chattering teeth of the pebbles.<br \/>\nJaw jaw. War war.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/0374258821\"><i>Selected Poems<\/i><\/a> was assembled from four Michael Hofmann collections published between 1983 and 1999, along with seven new poems. In the last decade, he has focused primarily on translating German literature, including works by Franz Kafka, Thomas Bernhard, Peter Stamm, and Joseph Roth (as well as his father, Gert Hofmann). Last year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/books\/features\/metric-conversion-why-poet-michael-hofmann-stopped-wreaking-destruction-on-his-family-in-verse-832527.html\">he explained his poetic silence<\/a> to <i>The Independent<\/i>: &#8220;I did feel from the mid-90s on that poems had a harder time getting out of me.
