What have I done, and what have I not,<br \/>\nwhat have I said, what have I sent that comes back now,<br \/>\nwilled or misapplied, in a boomerang of harm?<\/p>\n<p>This is a time of holding in the mouth, of chewing slowly<br \/>\neven these softened squares. The body is comforted by this<br \/>\nas it has been by the remembered scent of those I have loved<br \/>\nwho are far and gone from me and dead. Brought close<br \/>\nwith their completed lives, they seem to have known me wholly.<\/p>\n<p>Even this wheat-sweetened milk is delicious. And when one<br \/>\nsunken piece turns up&#8212;a surprise ending&#8212;its gray ghost<br \/>\nstirred and revealed, a small celebration takes place then,<br \/>\nunder the ribbed ceiling, near the back of the gums.<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Julie Hanson&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/partner\/29017\/biblio\/158729964x\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Unbeknownst<\/i><\/a> is a winner of the 2010 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uiowapress.org\/authors\/iowa-prize.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Iowa Poetry Prize<\/a>. (Yesterday, <a href=\"http:\/\/beatrice.com\/wordpress\/2011\/04\/04\/l-s-klatt-old-world-birds\/\">we featured the other winner<\/a>, L.S. Klatt&#8217;s <i>Cloud of Ink<\/i>.) The collection also includes &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.terrain.org\/poetry\/26\/hanson.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Allocation<\/a>&#8221; (published in <i>Terrain.org<\/i>) and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/tidingsofmagpies.blogspot.com\/2010\/07\/remedial-weeding.html\" target=\"_blank\">Remedial Weeding<\/a>&#8221; (originally published in <i>The Cincinnati Review<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Of <i>Unbeknownst<\/i>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyiowan.com\/2011\/03\/31\/Arts\/22466.html\" target=\"_blank\">University of Iowa Press editor Holly Carver has said<\/a>, &#8220;I&#8217;ve been working with these Poetry Prize books for 20-some years, and to my mind, her [manuscript] was one of the freshest and brightest books that we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve ever published. It just seemed to have an honesty and an accessibility that made it really stand above a lot of other really good, cleverly crafted poems that maybe didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t ring quite as true.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What can make something so simple taste so good, so indulgent?
