Consider Yourselves Warned

by Ron Hogan

Page Six finds it in its heart to promote a writer published by somebody besides HarperCollins today, as it passes along the news that Camille Paglia "has been lying low, working on Break, Blow, Burn, a study of 43 of the world's best poems" to appear from Pantheon next spring. The title's from a Donne sonnet which SparkNotes helpfully explains as "an appeal to God, pleading with Him not for mercy or clemency or benevolent aid but for a violent, almost brutal overmastering." Which is probably the same approach many of Paglia's fans take to her prose.

Speaking of HarperCollins, though, I couldn't help but notice that out of the seven sex books Amy Sohn read for NYTBR, three come from Judith Regan's imprint, which has also recently released memoirs from porn star Jenna Jameson and Toni Bentley, the ballerina with a penchant for anal sex. Not that there's any particular conclusion to draw here; after all, two of the other four books were both from Broadway, so it's not as if Regan's managed a monopoly on sex books yet.
