Americans Scratch Heads, Mutter, "Fred Hoyle? The Card Guy?"
by Ron Hogan"The world's best scientists nominate their favorite authors," says the Guardian, though what they really do is name them while somebody else does some rough tabulation. Asimov tops the list, followed by two British authors, John Wyndham and Fred Hoyle, not much in favor in the States. No other surprises for American readers, though it's interesting that LeGuin outranks Clarke--I would've thought scientists had a softer spot for the guy who practically invented the telecommunications industry, but go figure.
