"Funny Papers" Not So Funny This Week
by Ron HoganMy two favorite comic strips, Get Fuzzy and Doonesbury, both deal with soldiers losing limbs in Iraqi combat. Based on the two days' worth I've seen of each strip so far, Get Fuzzy seems likely to focus strictly on the emotional responses among its main characters (the wounded soldier is a never-before-seen relative of Rob, the human protagonist), which should prove interesting given that Satchel (the dog) and Bucky (the cat) often react to events like young kids might, while Garry Trudeau has chosen to use one of Doonesbury's most prominent supporting characters, B.D. (who may also, in the 4/21 strip, be appearing without his helmet for the first time in the strip's long history). I don't know how many young kids read Doonesbury anymore, but maybe Get Fuzzy will spark some serious discussions between children and their parents as the week goes by.
Meanwhile, Aaron Magruder runs another variation on the "Huey cracks wise about something he sees on the TV" strip he's been leaning on for months now.
