Lambda Takes to the Slaughter Of Award Nominee
by Ron HoganPlanetOut reports that the Lambda Literary Foundation has stricken J. Michael Bailey's The Man Who Would Be Queen from its list of nominated books dealing with transgenderism after receiving several complaints about the book's contents and conclusions. Says transgendered economist Deirdre McCloskey, invoking Godwin's Law ever so obliquely, "It would be like nominating 'Mein Kampf' for a literary prize in Jewish studies." At least one interested party has put together a compilation of volleys exchanged in the debate. This could make the awards ceremony in Chicago, where Bailey chairs the psych department at Northwestern and McCloskey teaches at UIC, a bit more entertaining, though I'm sure the category is now more than ever a lock for She's Not There, Jennifer Finney Boylan's memoir of transgendered life.
