Hot Diggity Damn Is This a Bargain
by Ron HoganThe Dalkey Archive is having a sale: 100 books for $500. Considering that they've just brought a ton of Stanley Elkin (on whom more later) back into print, and also publish Henry Green, Gilbert Sorrentino, Rikki Ducornet, David Markson, Harry Matthews, Nicholas Mosley, and so on, this is a pretty damn good deal. Order in the next three days and they'll even throw in eight Flann O'Brien books free. I may have to head down to Wall Street to roll some investment bankers to get in on this one myself, since the Significant Other responded to my query about a spare $500 by rolling over and telling me to close the bedroom door on my way back out...
UPDATE: Chad at Dalkey emailed when he spotted the first draft of this item: "The offer itself--$500 for 100 books--will continue past March 1st, but the "bonus" in March/April will be free shipping instead of the O'Brien books. (Personally I think the 8 O'Brien books is a more attractive bonus.)" I'm with him, but then I realize shipping on 100 books isn't going to come cheap...
I have been desperately tempted by this offer for months now and it's taken every ounce of self-control to hold myself back ... you're not helping the cause, Ron!
Posted by: TEV at February 27, 2004 01:37 PMYeah, Ron. What's the deal? Have you become a Dalkey flak or something? I'm trying to walk away here. Really. Must. Resist. Impulse.
Posted by: Ed at February 27, 2004 02:22 PMNot that you know me, but will you guys hate me if I tell you that I already took advantage of this offer, going halfsies with a friend last fall? The bonus offer then was free shipping, and an additional 5 books... I got 55 books out of the bargain, filling out my Elkin, Mathews, Sorrentino, and Green, etc... I'd already had a significant number of Dalkey titles, and had been secretly coveting the deal for some time.
Just finished reading Mathews' fine novel, Cigarettes, actually...
mmmm... impulsively excessive book-buying...
