More Literary Studies Without Literature

by Ron Hogan

I got hold of a copy of Franco Moretti's "Graphs, Maps, Trees" Sunday (thanks, prof!) and was very impressed; his quantitative approach offers some exciting new possibilities in studying all sorts of literary phenomena, from the rise of the novel in various nation-cultures to the half-life of genre (and why it is that detective fiction and science fiction have had longer spans than we've seen before). And this is just me thinking aloud, but it will be interesting to take another look at Charles Murray's Human Accomplishment with Moretti's suggestions in mind. Fruitful, I'm not so sure yet, but at the very least interesting.
